Natives of Utah, the future co-owners of Three Pines Coffee, Meg Frampton and Nick Price, moved to Los Angeles in 2013 to pursue music careers. As fate would have it, Nick landed a job as a barista. Michael Phillips, World Barista Champion of 2010, trained Nick at a coffee shop called Handsome Coffee Roasters, a popular cafe in the arts district. To their surprise the coffee community and coffee itself inspired the both of them more than music. So, they decided to put a plan in action to open their own shop. Since several coffee shops existed on every block in L.A., and because they missed their family, they decided to return to Utah to start up their shop. Because they didn’t have a lot of money to invest, they started out with a mobile espresso cart in the summer of 2015 at a grocery store called Liberty Heights Fresh. The positive response and popularity of Heart coffee, (the small-batch coffee beans they use from a coffee roaster based in Portland), prompted a move to a slightly larger location downtown near the Gallivan center at 62 East Gallivan Ave, Salt Lake City, Utah 84111.
