At Harmons we talk a lot about our beginnings as a neighborhood fruit stand because we think it’s important. Our store started in Utah and has grown here from infancy, putting down strong roots as the years have passed. Our roots are wrapped around our community, our neighborhoods, and our history.

Food is the common bond we all share, and it binds us together. Working together with our neighbors we have managed to create a grocery experience that is unlike any other. We have over 4,500 local products in our stores, and with the help of our local partners we’ve created a shopping and dining experience that not only tickles your taste buds but protects our community sustainably.

We thought we would share a few of our favorite recipes made with local Utah goods, so you can get an idea of how much fun it is to partner with foodies.

In our cafés we sell Caffe Ibis coffee (iced and hot) to-go, as well as on our shelves, and this delicious recipe for S’mores Cold Brew Coffee was created by them. Note it even has a garnish of crushed Kodiak Cakes Bear Bites on top.

One of the services we offer at Harmons is that of our dietitians, and unsurprisingly they also have some local favorites, choosing tasty local Dietitians Choice products that hit close to home and only take about 15 minutes to prepare! Dietitian Heather Lieber has a great blog post where you can find some of these great items and preparation suggestions.

And who doesn’t love French toast? Cooking School Chef Jake Driffill created this fantastic recipe, Every Day Should Be a Holiday French Toast, featuring Harmons challah bread and Honest John Orange Bitters.

Another local favorite is Salsa Queen, and she shared with us this amazing recipe for the Queen’s Ceviche. She also took some time out to visit with our Taste of Harmons Podcast hosts and you can listen and learn more about her amazing story.

If you’re craving brownies, we have a great recipe using Chocolate Conspiracy products. And we’re very proud of our Local Charcuterie Board, which features such great Utah products as Heber Valley and Beehive Cheeses, Creminelli Fine Meats, Pepperlane Sweet Mother of Onion Jam and Pepperlane Raz-Pepper Jam, Hollow Tree Honey, Harmons Artisan Bread, chocolate, and more.

OVER 4,500 LOCAL ITEMS

As we mentioned above, we have over 4,500 local items in our stores, and that number grows consistently. The reasons we focus so much on local are easy to explain.

“The variety and diversity of locally grown food and products we have available here in Utah is astounding,” said Todd Jensen, executive vice president of sales at Harmons. “Being able to contribute and support the continued growth of our dynamic food scene and these local businesses is what Harmons strives for day in and day out.”

Once again, we are excited to partner with Craft Lake City and to see all the amazing ways Utahns create, sow, and grow.

With a history grounded in the roots of Utah, Harmons is proud to be a local neighborhood grocer. From our 1932 beginnings as a small fruit stand started by George and Irene Harmon, we’ve evolved into a company with 19 grocery stores across Utah. But we have never forgotten who we are or where we came from.

The reason Harmons is successful and thriving has everything to do with our community. It’s our customers, food producers, the growers, the crafters. It’s our associates who embrace our values. It’s our partners who invest in our local community. We are local, and always have been, and through the years have come to understand community is a powerful thing.

With that realization we have chosen to carry more than 3,600 local products in our stores. And every year that number goes up.

You can learn more about our local partners from the Taste of Harmons Podcast where local makers join our hosts Chef Lesli Sommerdorf and Brandon Young to discuss all things food and more.

In the “Let’s Talk Local with Todd” episode, Todd Jensen, the executive vice president of sales for Harmons, shares stories of the opportunities he’s had to interact with local producers.

Shopping and buying local has a huge impact on the Utah environment and economy.

From artisan cheeses and craft chocolates to beard-grooming products, Utahns make and grow some of the best produce, food, drinks, and self-care products on the market. And when you head to your local Harmons to do your grocery shopping you can find them all in one place.

Another way Harmons supports our local community is with our Local Supplier Development Grant. Every year grants are awarded to local companies to help them grow and improve their businesses. Former grant winners include Salsa Queen, Bitter’s Lab, and Day’s Fresh Produce. We also have melons from Stirling Farms, Hollow Tree Honey (featured in Harmons Honey BBQ Sauce and some of our fresh-baked artisan breads), jalapeño pepper jelly from Pepperlane Preserves, and so much more.

We’re excited to partner with Craft Lake City and to see all the amazing ways Utahns create, sow, and grow. Together we can do amazing things and continue to build our local community and economy.

According to Stop AAPI Hate, since last March, there have been nearly 3,800 reports of hate incidents targeting Asian-Americans in the United States. These statistics reflect the continued need for societal change in order to combat inequality and racism. Craft Lake City stands in solidarity with the Asian-American community in asking for social change.

Last June, we took a pledge against racial and cultural injustice. As part of the pledge Craft Lake City promised to hold ourselves accountable and create institutional change by looking inward and taking action to be a more inclusive organization. Today, we’d like to share some of those action items with you.

Craft Lake City formed an internal Diversity and Inclusion staff committee that has accomplished the following goals:

Artist Adrienne Cataxinos. Photo courtesy of John Barkiple

Craft Lake City cares deeply about our creative community and the future of the artisans that enrich our culture. With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, many creatives may feel overwhelmed in how to manage the winter months and make ends meet. As Utah crafters, makers, builders, performers and artisans continue to face the economic challenges during this uncertain time, we wanted to provide a refreshed winter list of available grants, professional development, mental health tools, project assistance and resources for those needing additional support as we move into the colder months ahead.

Craft Lake City remains committed to elevating the creative culture of the Utah arts community. We realize the challenges of adapting while facing months on end of the unknown is depleting in more ways than one. We are encouraged to witness the ingenuity and tenacious spirit of our crafters community that continues to create during these distressing times. We understand this can take a toll, both mentally and economically, on Utah artisans. The internet can be an overwhelming place right now, and it can be tough to find the support you need. We hope that for many, this list of resources will be a starting point for accessing assistance that will empower, encourage and support. Looking to the new year, we hope artisans of all varieties continue to build, make, create and inspire.
