Activities will begin with a short visual presentation of the ideas of “Geometry Through Time” and then include pencil, eraser, and tracing paper explorations of ancient designs and ideas to create something new and original.

Making Music with Obsolete Electronics

with Joshua Faulkner from Conquer Monster

Saturday, August 12, 4:15 - 5:15 PM

AGES: Adults & children middle school age and up

Joshua has been modifying obsolete electronics and using them as musical instruments for over 15 years. In this workshop, circuit bending as a philosophy will be discussed. We will also discuss how to turn vintage gaming systems (NES, Gameboy, Atari 2600, etc.) and vintage computers into musical instruments by using a combination of hardware and software.

Exploring Eclipses

with Phil Matheson of UVU Physics

Saturday, August 12, 8:00 - 9:00 pm

AGES: Adults & children middle school age and up

The size and shape of our world has been known quite accurately for over 2000 years. The pattern of eclipses has been known even longer. This workshop will examine the very clever means by which ancient scientists were able to discover the objective dimensions of the Earth, Moon and Sun with little more than stone-age technology. The secret was in watching the moon and the eclipses it produced. Consider for a moment this interesting consequence: Any educated person in 1492 could have and did tell Columbus he was wrong about the size of the Earth. He thought it was about 15,000 miles in circumference. Everybody else knew it was about 25,000 miles around. Columbus just had to find somebody with money and not enough education to fund him in his erroneous pursuit!
