What is the Craft Lake City DIY Festival?

Craft Lake City’s Annual Do-It-Yourself Festival is a festival by locals, for locals, celebrating all things local. The Festival encompasses do-it-yourself culture as a whole, featuring artists and craftspeople, DIY engineers and tinkerers, foodies, singers and dancers, collectors and upcyclers. It celebrates the best in all of us—our desire to make greatness from the mundane and share it with our friends.

We strive to keep building upon our vision—to make our community a more beautiful, self-sufficient, and harmonious place through our shared love of creating.

Important Dates & Deadlines

  • Application opens: January 2018
  • Application closes: Thursday, April 5, 2018
  • Artisan Scholarship applications due: Friday, April 19, 2018
  • Invitation status and participation notification by email: Friday, May 11, 2018
  • Artisan Scholarship recipients announced: Friday, May 18, 2018

Festival Exhibiting Categories

The Craft Lake City DIY Festival has three categories of exhibitors. Click the link below to review the prospectus for your exhibition category:

Artisan/Craft Food/Vintage Vendor Prospectus

Eligibility:

The Craft Lake City DIY Festival is open to makers, creators & tinkerers who currently reside & operate in the state of Utah. No dealers, agents or representatives are permitted. Because the purpose of the DIY Festival is to showcase local makers and artisans, preference will be given to applicants whose items are handmade in Utah by the applicant. Craft Lake City reserves the right to reject any applications which do not fall within or meet our guidelines. Any applicant who has applied and is found to not meet requirement parameters will have their application forfeited with no refund of their application fee.

Original Work Regulation:

All creations must be original, handcrafted work. No commercial, mass produced or manufactured work that is not made by the artist(s) will be accepted. Upon submission of images, the artisan guarantees the accuracy of the description of artwork presented and the authenticity of the artwork as original and created by their own hands. The jury reserves the right to reject any displays or items not in keeping with the character of the images submitted.

All artwork exhibited at the Festival must be of the quality and style represented by the artist in images submitted with the application as well as of the media category for which they are accepted.

Full Disclosure of Availability:

Artists must be present during the entire Festival and should personally staff their booth space, as Festival attendees are enthusiastic to meet, speak and shop from DIY Festival creators. No agents, dealers, or representatives may attend the Festival in place of the artist.

For all who apply to the Festival, it is important fully disclose your availability honestly in the application. Failure to disclose your availability resulting in a no-show or leaving and closing your booth/table early can affect your current or future participation in the Festival.

Application Fee:

Application Fee: Non-refundable $20, paid online after completing the digital application. The application fee goes towards the cost of administrative processing and jurying.

Sub-Categories/Mediums:

  • 3D Work: The 3D Work category represents those who create sculptural works, which includes materials that are, but are not limited to: clay, found/upcycled materials, glass wood, ceramic or metal.
  • Craft Food: The Craft Food category represents artisans who create handcrafted and artisanal varieties of prepackaged, edible goods. Craft Food includes, but is not limited to: desserts, beverages, bitters, sauces, candy, etc. Please note that craft food vendors may not make any food on site at the Festival, including (but not limited to) the use of torches, blenders, stove tops, etc. If you are a food vendor and wish to prepare food on site, please email festivalfood@craftlakecity.com for information about our small and large commercial food vendor pricing and options.
  • Fiber: The Fiber category represents products created with natural fibers or cloth. The category includes, but is not limited to: weaving, felting, spinning, wearable clothing items, etc.
  • House & Home: The House & Home category applies to artisans who create goods for merchandising and home furnishing. The category includes, but is not limited to: plant holders, wall hangings, home decor, clocks, furniture, dinnerware, etc.
  • 2D, Illustration & Print: The broadest of the categories represented at the DIY Festival, the 2D, Illustration & Print category applies to those who create one-of-a-kind 2-dimensional creative works, stationery and other paper products, or prints. Mediums and materials may include, but are not limited to, the following: illustration, collage, drawing, painting, printmaking, letterpress cards, digital art, etc. Please note that original designs printed onto other materials (such as paper, clothing, mugs, etc.) qualifies as 2D.
  • Jewelry: The Jewelry category applies to those who create items that are wearable trinkets. Jewelry may be functional or decorative adornments as bracelets, necklaces, belts, headpieces and more.
  • Non-profit/Initiative Projects: The Non-Profit/Initiative applies to groups or organizations who represent either an organization or a collective group of creators. Limited availability. When applying, please select both the “Non-profit/Initiative Projects” category as well as the category that best represents the products that will be on display at the Festival.
  • Photography: The Photography category represents those who use the camera as their main form of creating work with minimal manipulation. Excessive collaging or manipulation should apply in the 2D, Illustration & Print category.
  • Skincare & Grooming: The Skincare & Grooming category applies to makers who create topical products, oils, bathing items, etc. used for skin, hair and body care.
  • Vintage: Hearkening back to the days when most clothing and furniture was handmade, this category is for vintage enthusiasts who resell quality, antique clothing and/or items. All clothing offered for sale in this category must have been made previous to 1988, and must not include any big-box store, prefabricated labels. Furniture and other retro items must be handmade and predate 1988.

Photographs in your Application:

Well-taken images of your work are valuable to your application. Focus on capturing images of five single products that can provide insight to the jury of your craftsmanship and creativity.

Craft Lake City offers Application Assistance Days that are open to all applicants to assist with preparing professional quality photography of your products. Visit http://craftlakecity.com/application-assistance/ for details. 

Jury Process:

After applications close, they are juried anonymously by a panel of local individuals. Jurors are not in any way employed, contracted or internally associated with Craft Lake City. All exhibitor applications remain anonymous to the jury, and jurors will only have access to the applicant’s uploaded five images, which includes description and market price of the product.

Invited Artisan/Craft Food/Vintage Vendor Fees:

6’x3’ Table* $225
One-day booth, Sunday $150

Special Placement $300

*Exhibitors opting to participate only on Friday and Saturday pay the full weekend fee.

Booth and Table Info:

Following are the exhibit space options for applicants in the Artisan/Craft Food/Vintage category:

  • 10’x10’ Booth: 10’x10’ tent canopy provided; no walls, tables or chairs provided. Exhibitors who have a large display and inventory to fill the space should apply for a booth space.
  • 6’x3’ Table: 6’x3’ table provided; no chairs or linens provided. Exhibitors who have smaller items, displays, and inventory should apply for a table space.

All fees stated above contribute to rental, setup and labor costs for booths and tables. The booths/tables will be ready and set up for your arrival during the Festival. Craft Lake City prides itself on being able to provide these items to exhibitors at a subsidized cost in order to keep fees low. If you would prefer to bring your own booth or table, please indicate this in your application. Fees are the same for exhibitors opting to provide their own booths or tables.

Booth Sharing Policy:

Applicants in the Artisan/Craft Food/Vintage category may opt to share a booth with one other exhibitor in this category. The shared booth fee is $475 ($325 booth fee plus an additional fee of $150 to share). Both artisans interested in sharing a booth must apply and both artisans must be accepted in order to share a booth at the Craft Lake City DIY Festival. On the application, both artisans must state with whom they would like to share a booth. Table sharing is not allowed—this option is available for only booths. Only two artisans are allowed to share one booth.

About Special Placement:

Exhibitors in the Artisan/Craft Food/Vintage category who opt for special placement have the opportunity to discuss and select their placement on the Festival grounds with Festival staff and production team members.  Craft Lake City secures special placement requests according to the order in which payment of the special placement fee is received (in other words, first come, first served). Special placement requests are filled to the best of our abilities giving consideration to safety codes and Gallivan Plaza rules. Craft Lake City reserves the right to make alterations and amendments based on circumstance.

Cancellation Policy:

Any cancellations will need to be received by July 1, 2018. If you cancel after this date, you forfeit your spot in the DIY Festival, and you are not permitted to sell, trade or sublease your space. We have a long waiting list of exhibitors wishing to participate and reserve the right to fill spots as we see fit. There will be no refunds on fees paid if you cancel after July 1, 2018. When you pay your invoice, please make sure you are able to participate.

Sustainability Initiatives at the DIY Festival:

Craft Lake City is working toward making the DIY Festival a zero-waste event through sustainable, low-energy initiatives. Our team collaborates with artisans and vendors at the Festival to significantly reduce waste and electricity usage on the plaza.

Electricity

  • Craft Lake City supports green energy solutions. Therefore, vendors are encouraged to utilize solar energy and LEDs to power their booths after daylight.
  • We recommend exhibitors bring portable (electricity-free) chargers and batteries for cell phones, iPads, and electronics used for payment processing.
  • Availability of electricity on the plaza is extremely limited. For artisans requiring power, access to electricity will be available to rent during the DIY Festival for a flat $150 fee, which must be reserved and paid in advance with booth or table payment. Craft Lake City does careful planning and testing to ensure we meet the needs of those who have requested and paid for electricity on the plaza. As such, electrical access is priced to reflect its scarcity.
  • Unauthorized use of electricity puts other exhibitors at risk as it may cause outages. Participants who have knowingly not disclosed power needs prior to the event and are found to be using power may be asked to provide immediate, on-the-spot payment for power use.

NEW THIS YEAR: Plastic Bag Restriction

  • Craft Lake City recently learned that plastic bags cause significant and costly problems for recycling equipment and facilities, and as a result Salt Lake City’s recycling program can no longer accept plastic bags. Therefore, beginning in 2018, single-use plastic bags will be prohibited at the DIY Festival as part of our commitment to sustainable initiatives.
  • Festival attendees will be asked to bring or buy reusable (non-plastic) bags for their purchases.
  • Vendors must avoid providing plastic bags for customers. Recyclable paper bags or biodegradable/compostable bags made from non-GMO plant-based materials serve as good alternatives. Vendors may consider selling reusable (non-plastic) bags at their booth or offering incentives to customers who bring their own bags or containers.
  • Exhibitors are encouraged to limit the use of plastic and styrofoam in packaging whenever possible.
  • We recommend that food vendors provide reusable or recyclable service ware.
  • All artisans and vendors must pack out their waste and recyclable materials. (Tip: we recommend packing out trash after load-in before the DIY Festival begins, and then each night after the festival closes).

Sales & Tax Information:

Craft Lake City does not take any money from commission or sales of your works or products during the course of the Festival. The Utah State Tax Commission will mail you a required sales tax form to complete approximately one week after the DIY Festival. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to pay the appropriate taxes from sales at the end of the event.

Exhibitor Responsibilities & Safety:

By applying and accepting Craft Lake City’s invitation, all exhibiting artists agree to comply with Craft Lake City, Craft Lake City DIY Festival and Gallivan Plaza rules & regulations.

The exhibitor assumes all responsibility for safeguarding of their products and their displays at the Craft Lake City DIY Festival from August 10 – 12, 2018. It is the exhibitor’s responsibility to insure their property. Craft Lake City has the right to close the Craft Lake City DIY Festival if any unforeseen circumstances occur that would affect the safety of the event attendees or vendors. Vendors are required to disclose their availability to participate in the Festival at the time of application and during acceptance of their invitation. Failure to do so may affect the exhibitor’s future opportunity to participate in the Festival. By participating, the exhibitor understands that abuse of any kind is not welcome. Any individual who displays negative, crude, crass, belligerent or any other non-exemplary behavior that causes discomfort towards any person present at the Festival will be asked to leave. Craft Lake City reserves the right to determine what behaviors are deemed inappropriate and non-characteristic of Craft Lake City standards. We do not condone any racist, bigoted or unsafe behavior from any area of the Festival or within our community.

The exhibitor, when invited, agrees to hold harmless Craft Lake City and the Craft Lake City DIY Festival, sponsors, partner organizations, coordinators, volunteers or employees, for any damage, loss, or theft, to artwork, displays or other personal property, or injury to their person, regardless of cause resulting from their participation in this event. The exhibitor agrees to abide by all the rules and regulations set.

DIY Engineer/STEM Exhibitor Prospectus

Eligibility:

  • DIY Engineer/Tinkerer: Exhibitors in this category are Utah-based tinkerers and/or start-up entrepreneurs who may be hobbyists or own and operate a small business single-handedly. Exhibitors in this category want to showcase their technology and/or product ideas with an interactive exhibit out in front of a public audience at the 2018 Craft Lake City DIY Festival.
  • Business: Exhibitors in this category are established local Utah businesses or companies that would like to showcase their technology and/or products with an interactive exhibit in front of a public audience at the 2018 Craft Lake City DIY Festival.
  • Non-Profit/Institution: Exhibitors in this category are established university or institutional affiliated organizations or programs, non-profit organizations, or government agencies who would like to showcase an interactive exhibit in front of a public audience at the 2018 Craft Lake City DIY Festival.

Exhibitors in this category will exhibit in the STEM Building at a 6’x3’ table space. This building is located on north portion of Gallivan plaza on 200 south. Bustling with creative projects, air conditioning and a balcony, Google Fiber’s STEM Building showcases the latest inventions and innovations from Utah’s maker community.

Table sharing is not allowed. We understand that some exhibits may not fit on a 6’x3’ table. Please let us know if you have questions or concerns regarding the size or placement of your exhibit.

Electricity is included for STEM Building exhibitors. If your exhibit requires internet connectivity, you should plan to bring a wifi hotspot, as the wifi at the Gallivan Center is unreliable.

Stage Performer Prospectus

Eligibility:

The Craft Lake City DIY Festival is open to makers, creators & performers who currently reside & operate in the state of Utah. Craft Lake City reserves the right to reject any applications which do not fall within or meet our guidelines. Any applicant who has applied and is found to not meet requirement parameters will have their application forfeited with no refund of their application fee.

Original Work Regulation:

Stage performers are required to perform only their own original work—no covers.

Application Fee:

Application Fee: Non-refundable $20, paid online after completing the digital application. The application fee goes towards the cost of administrative processing and jurying.

Stage Performer Sub-Categories:

  • Solo Artist – performing one 30-minute set
  • Band – performing one 30-minute set
  • Dance Company/Troupe – performing one 15-minute set
  • Performance Art Group – we will contact you to determine set time
  • Other (we will require you to specify the type of performer you are for purposes of programming events onstage at the Festival): This category allows for us to accept and view the various other performance concepts that could be at the DIY Festival, and is not encompassed by the other categories we have available for application at the Festival.

Photographs in your Application:

Craft Lake City uses the photos you provide in your application for publicity during the Festival season. Focus on providing high quality images that represent you well.

Jury Process:

After applications close, performer applications are reviewed and juried by Craft Lake City’s Entertainment Coordinator, and accepted performers are notified by email.

Performing at the DIY Festival:

Accepted performers will be contacted by Craft Lake City’s Entertainment Coordinator to schedule their performance time slot. You will be assigned to either the Main Stage in the middle of the plaza or the Gallivan Stage on Gallivan Avenue. Both stages accommodate the same size audience.

Performers are required to arrive and be ready to perform at least a half hour before they appear onstage.  Craft Lake City will provide a Sound Engineer to set up and run audio and a Stage Manager to help direct he 15-minute setup before your act and 15-minute tear down after your act.

Dance troupes must provide a digital (mp3) recording of the music to which you will be performing. We also need to know how many performers will be on stage at any given time and an overall total of people involved with your set.

Performers & Payment:

Performers will be paid immediately after their performance at the Festival. Once you are accepted to perform, our Entertainment Coordinator will reach out to you to confirm the payment amount. Checks will be written to the authorized individual who was specified when completing the application for the 2018 Craft Lake City DIY Festival.
