Craft Lake City and PBS Utah Present Handmade Leather Book Covers Workshop!

Craft Lake City is thrilled to collaborate with PBS Utah for the final craft workshop of the year, a hands-on experience inspired by PBS programming and the storytelling tradition championed by filmmaker Ken Burns! “Craft Lake City Workshop: Handmade Leather Book Covers” invites participants to explore early American craftsmanship through an enriching leatherworking workshop led by Stephanie Mma-Powell of Powell Supply Co.

This two-hour, beginner-friendly workshop draws inspiration from Ken Burns’ six-part PBS documentary THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION. Participants will take a step into history by crafting their own durable and reusable leather book cover. For early Americans these covers were crucial for preserving important writings and possessions. Powell will guide participants through 18th-19th century leatherworking techniques, while teaching the value of creating something made to last.

Participants Will:

  • Learn traditional leatherworking techniques like: cutting, punching, shaping and decorative stamping
  • Get a feel for traditional American craftsmanship
  • Build starter techniques for your own projects
  • Be provided with all needed supplies
  • Take home a reusable leather book cover

Workshop Details:

  • When: Friday, December 12, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
  • Where: PBS Utah Studio, 101 South Wasatch Drive, Salt Lake City, UT 84112
