AI POLICY

Our Vision

Craft Lake City’s mission is to educate, promote and inspire local artisans while enriching Utah’s creative culture through science, technology and art. Our AI Policy reflects that mission by encouraging human-centered use of artificial intelligence to enhance creativity, efficiency and collaboration, while ensuring that human artistry and craftsmanship remain at the heart of everything we do.

We believe AI can be a useful tool for artisans, exhibitors, volunteers, partners, staff and board members when used with care, transparency and accountability. By approaching AI responsibly and with emotional intelligence, we strengthen our ability to support local creators, explore innovation and uphold the integrity of human-made art.

 

Our Commitments

Craft Lake City is taking proactive steps to ensure responsible, transparent and creative AI use by:

• Allowing staff and board members to use AI tools for administrative work, design inspiration, marketing inspiration and copywriting inspiration with all final decisions and editing made by humans.
• Permitting artisans and exhibitors to use AI as a support tool while requiring clearlabeling and disclosure when AI is part of the creative process.

 

Prioritizing Human Creation:

• Artwork exhibited or sold at Craft Lake City events must be predominantly human-made using traditional or digital artistic methods (painting, drawing, sculpting, photography, printmaking, etc.). AI-generated components, if present, must represent a minimal and supporting role in the final work.

 

Limiting AI in Marketing and Promotion:

• Artists may not market or promote fully AI-generated artwork in their booths or related materials. If AI was used for personal creative exploration or process reference, this must be clearly stated and not represented as handmade work for sale.

 

Protecting Human-Led Artistic Expression:

• Craft Lake City reserves the right to decline applications featuring artwork that appears to be created primarily or entirely by AI, or work with a substantial AI contribution.

 

STEM and Educational Use:

• STEM exhibitors are encouraged to use AI openly for demonstrations, research, or educational activities that promote public understanding of technology, coding, science and design.

 

Ongoing Evaluation:

• Reviewing this policy quarterly to remain current with emerging technology, evolving artistic standards and community expectations.

Transparency: We believe trust grows from openness. Craft Lake City will communicate honestly about how AI is used across our programs and events, providing context and clarity so our artisans, exhibitors and audiences can feel confident in how technology supports, not replaces, human creativity.

Human Creativity: We will ensure that human imagination, craftsmanship and authorship remain the foundation of every creative work we present or support.

Ethical Practice: We will maintain high ethical standards, protect artistic integrity and reject unauthorized, inauthentic or exploitative uses of AI.

Accountability: We will ensure that all AI-assisted projects include human oversight, accurate representation and responsible authorship.

Innovation with Integrity: We will explore emerging technologies thoughtfully, using AI to enhance, not replace, the human creative process.

We recognize our responsibility to approach emerging technologies with care and awareness, striving to make choices that honor our planet’s finite resources. Just as we celebrate creativity and innovation, we commit to supporting practices that respect the environment and sustain the natural world for future generations.
