Craft Lake City Announces New Installation Local Voices: Microsculpture: Insect Portraits By Levon Biss
Salt Lake City, UT – July 25, 2024 – Craft Lake City and the Natural History Museum of Utah (NHMU) are thrilled to present an enchanting new street-side installation, “Local Voices: Microsculpture: Insect Portraits by Levon Biss”. This captivating show offers a glimpse into the intricate beauty of microscopic insect structures and the museum’s exhibits, and is designed to inspire the public to explore the full exhibit in person at the museum. Displayed for the public on 10 steel frames along Broadway (300 S), between 200 West and 200 East in downtown Salt Lake City, this installation will run through the end of September.
In NHMU’s efforts to enhance scientific understanding and foster a deeper appreciation for the natural world, “Local Voices: Microsculpture” presents stunning, high-magnification portraits of insects, captured in striking large-format and high-resolution detail by photographer Levon Biss. This installation features a sneak peek of the intricate insect collection from the Oxford University Museum of Natural History now on view at the Natural History Museum of Utah.
Founded in 1969, the Natural History Museum of Utah was established to provide a dedicated space for the study, collection and preservation of natural history. Their new “Microsculpture” exhibit, running now until September 15, and much more can be viewed in full at the museum at 301 Wakara Way, Salt Lake City, UT 84108.
Award-winning photographer Levon Biss has captured a vast spectrum of genres with his photography, such as sports and documentary. Having work featured on esteemed publications such as The New York Times, Sports Illustrated and TIME, Biss’s creations have been exhibited worldwide and reside in a multitude of museum and private collections. The images were developed from more than 8,000 individual images using microscope lenses, and grants viewers the chance to perceive a world invisible to the naked eye.

“Local Voices: Microsculpture: Insect Portraits by Levon Biss” in partnership with NHMU is open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge. To get discounted tickets to visit the Natural History Museum of Utah to see the entirety of their newest exhibit “Microsculpture: Insect Portraits by Levon Biss”, visitors will have the opportunity to scan a QR code while viewing a sneak peak of the artwork series on the streets of downtown Salt Lake City. “Local Voices: Microsculpture, Insect Portraits by Levon Biss” will be on display in 10 frames from July 25 to September 27, 2024.
With support from The Center for the Living City and The Temporary Museum of Permanent Change, Craft Lake City’s Local Voices installation series spotlights the inspiring work of Utah-based organizations in an effort to connect the community with ideas that matter. Craft Lake City curates this seasonal, rotating outdoor art exhibition for the Salt Lake community. The exhibits feature visually inspiring and interactive artwork meant to engage visitors and patrons. All Local Voices installations are displayed in fourteen metal frames along the sidewalks on the north and south sides of Broadway (300 South) between 200 E and 200 W in downtown Salt Lake City.
