CRAFT LAKE CITY ANNOUNCES SPECIAL ACTIVITY WITH ARTIST
ROGER WHITING FOR THE 7th ANNUAL CRAFT LAKE CITY DIY FESTIVAL PRESENTED BY HARMONS & KEN GARFF FIAT

SALT LAKE CITY, Thursday, July 30th — Craft Lake City is excited to announce our partnership activity with artist Roger Whiting for the 7th Annual DIY Festival presented by Harmons and Ken Garff Fiat.
Children of all ages are invited to take part in a free activity that will be held in the Kids’ Craft Area all-day on both Friday, Aug. 7th and Saturday, Aug. 8th of the festival. Children will have the chance to assist Whiting with the creation of a mosaic mural that will be installed in an upper-grades building of the Dual Immersion Academy, housed in the Glendale neighborhood of Salt Lake City. Each young visitor not only has the chance to be a part of a community-oriented art project, but also the opportunity to learn about another art form, mosaic making.
The design of the mosaic was created in collaboration with Whiting and the 6th through 8th grade students of Desirae Pauga’s social studies class at the Dual Immersion Academy.
Whiting believes it is important to integrate art experience with children. “Youth need to see that their voices matter, so they can work on developing original, positive ideas and solutions for their lives that can better help us all,” Whiting says, “I love creating murals with youth because they are silly, creative and willing to learn new things.”

About The Artist, Roger Whiting: Roger has been creating murals for over a decade. After a brief stint as an art teacher in a public school, he realized that his talents were better suited to project-based learning. He began to focus his energies on grant writing and developing large-scale murals and mosaic projects with youth in low-income and underprivileged communities. His business, Community Arts of Utah, helps to fill the gap for youth who want to have high-quality arts experiences, but would not have the resources in their neighborhoods otherwise.

The DIY Festival is a two-day festival held annually at the Gallivan Center, located at 239 S. Main Street, on Aug. 7 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and Aug. 8 from noon to 10 p.m.
