New Americans Workshop Series Instructor Feature: Intro to Henna Body Art Workshop with Jawaher Fadhel

Craft Lake City is thrilled to announce the second class in the New Americans Workshop Series: Intro to Henna Body Art with Jawaher Designs! Each craft workshop in this series will be taught by makers from around the globe who’ve made Utah their home due to humanitarian crises in their countries of origin. This series of six workshops, running from November 2022 through April 2023, is made possible with the support of the International Rescue Committee and funding from the Salt Lake Arts Council.

On Thursday, December 15, 2022, Jawaher Fadhel will be teaching an Intro to Henna Body Art Workshop at the Craft Lake City HQ from 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. In this introductory hands-on workshop participants will learn the fundamentals of henna body art as they create gorgeous temporary tattoos on their own skin. Attendees will first learn how to mix fresh henna (using a powder derived from the flowering henna plant) to achieve the perfect natural orange to red brownish color. They will then learn the right way of holding the henna cones to achieve fine detail work as they pipe their designs. Jawaher will teach participants how to make simple, eye-catching flower designs using this natural, botanical dye.

Art and designs is everything I think about if I need to meditate,” says Jawaher. “It’s an amazing gift and talent that I use as self care as well.” When asked why she’s excited to bring her craft to the CLC audience, Jawaher says, “Because I can tell my story through these arts and designs. I can make people feel good and boost their energy.”

Jawaher, which means jewelry in Arabic, was born in Sudan and raised in Libya before making her way to Salt Lake City where she began offering her gorgeous henna designs to the Utah community. “Jawaher Designs is a family business,” she says. “It’s going to be a big company for traditional Sudanese outfits, natural henna, Arts and Designs. Through my business my kids will be going to the best schools and universities.”

As part of this six-part series, Craft Lake City is offering three full scholarships to each workshop based on financial need. To browse our upcoming workshops and to purchase tickets visit https://craftlakecity.com/craft-workshops/.

About Jawaher Designs:

My name is Jawaher, which means jewelry in Arabic, and I am a henna and jewelry artist located in Salt Lake County, Utah since 2012. I was born in Sudan and raised in Libya. As a child, my mother noticed my love for handcrafts and designs and allowed me to practice with her. Growing up in African and Middle Eastern cultures, I began to channel my creativity into henna, a 100% natural dye that is derived from plants before it is dried and sifted into a fine powder. I have been doing henna for 25 years.

About the IRC:

The International Rescue Committee provides opportunities for refugees, asylees, victims of human trafficking, survivors of torture, and other immigrants to thrive in America. Each year, thousands of people, forced to flee violence and persecution, are welcomed by the people of the United States into the safety and freedom of America. These individuals have survived against incredible odds. The IRC works with government bodies, civil society actors, and local volunteers to help them translate their past experiences into assets that are valuable to their new communities. In Salt Lake City and other offices across the country, the IRC helps them to rebuild their lives. Since opening its doors in 1994, the IRC in Salt Lake City has resettled nearly 12,000 refugees and provided life-changing services to thousands more in the Beehive State. Services include resettlement, education, health, advocacy, economic wellbeing, and more.
