Volunteers are the backbone of the DIY Festival. They help us connect more than 20,000 community members to local artisans, vendors, DIY engineers, and performers throughout the festival weekend. SOLD OUT: Macrame Plant Hanger

This NHMU Craft Workshop, presented by Craft Lake City, will be taught by artisan Marti Woolford of marti makes. Woolford will introduce attendees to macramé, the art of making decorative and functional objects from knotted cord. Participants will learn about the history of the craft, practice techniques for tying knots, and evaluate patterns used in macramé textiles. Woolford will then teach attendees to apply their new knowledge and skills to make intricate, hand-knotted plant hangers to take home.

Handmade Journals or Sketchbooks

Learn the basics of bookbinding and make your own sketchbook in this Craft Lake City workshop at West Elm!  Artist and designer Hannah Bleak of Sagemark Text will introduce workshop attendees to basic bookbinding tools like thread, awls, paper, and book board. Then Hannah will teach participants how to use the ancient Egyptian coptic stitch technique to sew a hardbound 5x7 journal. Attendees will have the option to use pre-made book covers or to engage their creativity and paint their own. Join us to create a sketchbook for yourself or as a perfect gift for Mother’s Day!

Sun-Printed Cyanotypes

Experienced local artist Chris Blackburn of Blackburn Studio uses vintage processes to create striking cyanotype prints and tintype photographs. Cyanotypes are cyan-blue prints created through an alternative photographic process invented by astronomer John Frederick William Herschel in 1842. In this NHMU Craft Workshop presented by Craft Lake City, Blackburn will teach participants how to create stunning sun-printed cyanotypes on paper and fabric using foliage and foraged materials.
