Volunteers are the backbone of the DIY Festival. They help us connect more than 20,000 community members to local artisans, vendors, DIY engineers, and performers throughout the festival weekend. SOLD OUT: Sun-Printed Cyanotypes

Experienced local artist Chris Blackburn of Blackburn Studio uses vintage processes to create striking cyanotype prints and tintype photographs. Cyanotypes are cyan-blue prints created through an alternative photographic process invented by astronomer John Frederick William Herschel in 1842. In this NHMU Craft Workshop presented by Craft Lake City, Blackburn will teach participants how to create stunning sun-printed cyanotypes on paper and fabric using foliage and foraged materials.

Herb-Infused Balms Workshop

Join herbalist Josh Williams of Greenthread Herbs for a DIY adventure into the world of herbal balms! In this workshop at West Elm, attendees will learn about a variety of medicinal herbs and their benefits, try several herb-infused oils and balms, then create their own local beeswax-based balm using pre-made oils and dried flowers. Participants will learn how to create herb-infused oils at home and will build confidence in choosing herbs to work with for making balms.

Glass Pendant Workshop

Create your own glass pendant in this workshop at West Elm with local glass artist and educator Sarinda Jones! Students of all experience levels will be introduced to fundamental concepts of kiln formed glass and jewelry making. Sarinda will demonstrate the process for properly cutting glass, and then students will assemble glass pieces into wearable sculptures. Sarinda will take the assembled pendants back to her Salt Lake City studio for firing, and they will be ready for pickup within one week. Please note that this class involves sharp glass, super glue and tools.

Expressive Floral Watercolors

Learn the basics of painting florals, foliage and fillers in this Craft Lake City workshop at West Elm! Artist and art educator Kara Aina will guide attendees through an exploration of various watercolor techniques and washes to create an expressive floral bouquet. Attendees will each create a painting by pairing newly learned watercolor skills with a color palette of their choice. Materials will be provided and no experience is necessary.
