Keynote Speaker / Workshop Instructor / Panelist
Seb Lester trained in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins in London. He now lives and works as an artist and designer in Lewes, England. Lester is one of the world’s highest-profile calligraphers. He has created logos and illustrations for clients including NASA, Apple, Nike, Intel, Montblanc, The New York Times and The 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics. Previously a Senior Type Designer at Monotype, he has developed custom typefaces for many familiar brands, including British Airways, Intel, Waitrose, The Daily Telegraph and H&M. Lester is the designer of the retail typefaces Neo Sans, Neo Tech, Soho and Scene. He loves letterforms, stating, “I find the Latin alphabet to be one of our most beautiful and profound creations”.
Ximena Jiménez (She/They)

Ximena Jiménez is a lettering artist and muralist born in Colombia and trained in the world of letters in Buenos Aires.

Becca Clason is a stop motion animator and tactile lettering artist based in Utah. Using stop motion magic, Becca brings food, paper, and other objects to life for commercials and social videos. Skyler Chubak is a full time lettering and ornamental design artist based out of Salt Lake City, Utah. He specializes in gold leaf glass work, hand engraving, ornamental signs, and calligraphy classes.

Kyle Letendre is a big softy from Portland, Oregon. Since 2016, Kyle has operated an independent studio focusing on commercial lettering, illustration, type and graphic design. Their fusion of function and flair has attracted collaborations with clients like Target, Penguin Random House, Mercedes-Benz, Paramount and YouTube. Informed by their background in screen-printing and drawing, Kyle’s work explores forms as vessels for expression, blurring the binaries between type and image. Further gilding the lily, Kyle has begun performing and sewing for drag under the name Tomboy.

Lettering Murals: Live Demonstration Workshop with Ximena Jiménez

Join us as we explore the art of mural lettering in this alluring workshop taught by world-renowned artist Ximena Jimenéz, a Colombian lettering artist who specializes in murals, branding and clothing design. In this live mural demonstration, Jimenéz will walk attendees through how they incorporate lettering into their dynamic mural paintings and dive into their step-by-step creative process. Attendees will get to learn Jiménez’s tips and tricks for creating a compelling mural while incorporating elements of color, design and of course, lettering. This workshop is about the power of creation and learning by watching Jiménez’s captivating live performance sponsored by Uprok. No Materials Needed. (Limit 88 Attendees).

Flourishing for Italics By Seb Lester

Seb Lester will define what flourishing is and describe the history and evolution of flourishing in Western Calligraphy. The focus will be on understanding the underlying principles governing curvilinear flourishing Italics. Participants will be asked to write words and find ways to flourish them
in pleasing and harmonious ways. This will be a relaxed and informal workshop, questions are encouraged. A basic understanding of the italic hand and broad nib pen will be helpful to benefit from this workshop. Additional material fee of $30 per person is required for this class. (Limit 88 Attendees)

Tactile Type: Beautifully Temporary By Becca Clason
(All Levels)
In memory of the late Adé Hogue, with whom she shared both a friendship and a passion for typographic tactile art, Becca Clason will teach a hands-on, tangible type workshop—the same topic that she invited Adé to teach at the first LetterWest conference in 2019. Becca will work with attendees to concept, style, and photograph their own dimensional lettering, which they will create from a provided material of their choice on a flat background surface. During the workshop, attendees will each choose one word or letter, create a sketch of it to use as reference, manipulate and style their materials by hand, and photograph their finished piece, so their creation will endure even after it’s wiped away. Becca will share her experience with and give tips on lighting, using various materials, styling letterforms and other props, and photographing final flatlay designs. Prior lettering experience is preferred, but not required. Additional material fee of $20 per person is required for this class.(Limit 24 Attendees)

Traditional Decorated Illuminated Letter Workshop with Skyler Chubak

Discover the splendor of ornamental lettering at this traditional decorated illuminated lettering workshop with lettering and ornamental design artist Skyler Chubak, a Salt Lake City based artist who specializes in gold leaf glass work, hand engraving, ornamental signs and calligraphy. In this workshop, Skyler will guide participants through the process of building up an ornamental initial from start to finish. Specifically, attendees will learn how to construct the layout, illustration and placement of shading and drop shadows to create their very own lettering masterpiece. Expressive Lettering with Kyle Letendre

Drawing a bold piece of lettering begins with a simple, iterative approach. Through hands-on demonstrations and collaborative feedback, students will draw a lively piece of lettering from a loose pencil to a refined comp. Beginning with tidy, unadorned forms, we’ll draft increasingly more bombastic drawings until we arrive at an eye-popping beauty, all the while sharing key strategies for cohesion, consistency, adding dimension, and mixing styles.

Keynote speakers will present at the Midvale Performing Arts Center while workshops and activities will happen at businesses in Midvale’s arts and culture district on historic Main Street.
Just 10 miles from downtown Salt Lake City, Midvale’s historic main street has a strong arts presence with two theaters, a dance academy, three architecture design studios, two interior design stores and several tattoo studios. Midvale is quickly making a name for itself within Utah’s creative community through its Annual Mural Fest! Take a walk down Historic Main Street and Center Street and view over ten murals that decorate the street with art and color.

How many days is LetterWest 2024? Where will it be held?
The Annual Craft Lake City LetterWest in 2024 is a one day event in partnership with Midvale City’s Midvale on Main Arts and Culture District.
How much are tickets?
Tickets are available now for $175. Additional workshop supply fees may be necessary depending on the workshop. Material fees are noted in the workshop description.
What is included in the price of the conference ticket?
Ticket price includes the full conference schedule of two keynote presentations, two workshops per ticket holder, an interactive lunchtime activity, a panel discussion and an invite to our afterhours mixer.
Are workshop materials provided?
Yes! Workshop materials will be provided by Craft Lake City for each class! While certain workshops may require an extra supply fee in addition to the general admission ticket, we also offer workshops at no additional cost. Additionally, we strongly encourage you to bring your favorite lettering supplies from home, but it is not required to get the full conference experience.

Who can come to LetterWest? Do I have to be a professional lettering artist?
LetterWest is for everyone! While we offer a few workshops geared towards lettering professionals, we have others that are created with new letterers in mind. No matter what your skill level! Do you love hand-lettering and want to meet others that do as well? This is the conference for you.
Where specifically will LetterWest activities take place in Midvale?
LetterWest 2024 will take place in a few locations in Midvale City’s Midvale on Main Arts and Culture District, specifically Midvale Performing Arts Center, The Pearl on Main, Midvale City Hall, Midvale Art House and Dark Arts Tattoo Studio. It is a walkable area where attendees will have the opportunity to enjoy the historic buildings, local business and numerous outdoor murals while moving from one venue to another. We will all start our day together with two keynote speakers in the Midvale Performing Arts Center, where you will receive a more detailed map.
How close is Midvale to Salt Lake City?
Midvale is just 20 minutes south of Salt Lake City.
How do I sign up for the workshops?
Workshop sign ups are included with your ticket price on a first come first serve basis. Selections are made during the checkout process when attendees purchase their ticket.
Can I attend a workshop without signing up?
To attend a LetterWest workshop, you will need to purchase a LetterWest ticket, then register for which workshops you’d like to attend through the Ticketleap portal. While some require an additional fee for supplies, some have no additional cost. However, we will have a free, interactive lunchtime activity that anyone (regardless if they are a ticket holder) can participate in.
Is the Mixer only for LetterWest attendees?
Yes! An exclusive mixer is set to take place at Dark Arts Tattoo Studio, featuring a specially curated playlist by local artist Robin Banks, along with cocktails and beer generously provided by Midvale's own Vintage Distillery and Bohemian Brewery. Attendees will also have the chance to enter an opportunity drawing for a year subscription to Adobe Creative Suite. Additionally, renowned Portland lettering expert and LetterWest presenter Kyle Letendre has designed unique tattoo designs for the event. These tattoos will be skillfully inked by 4 talented Midvale tattoo artists, including @el_franky801, @tattoo_slick, @monstro13, and @thesingingfinch.
