Before the Festival
Q: When and where is Kid Row?
Kid Row will be held in a mostly shaded grassy area outdoors at the Utah State Fairpark at 155 N 1000 W Salt Lake City UT 84116 on Saturday, August 14 from 10 a.m.- 2 p.m. Load-in will begin at 8:00 a.m.
Q: How do I get information about Kid Row?
Craft Lake City will communicate with each kid artisan’s parent or legal guardian (as listed in the application) directly via email. If your contact information changes or if you have any questions, please email kidrow@craftlakecity.com.
Q: How do I know what spot I’ll have in Kid Row?
Kid Row artisans will be given their spots on site when they arrive at the Utah State Fairpark for load-in. If you have any special needs, please let us know at kidrow@craftlakecity.com so that we can make appropriate accommodations.
Q: May I bring my own table and chairs?
For Kid Row, we ask that you do not bring your own table and chairs, but instead use those provided.
Q: Do I have access to electricity?
Electricity will not be available in Kid Row.
Q: When will I get my load-in instructions?
Your load-in instructions will be provided to you via email at least one week prior to the Festival. You will be assigned a short time slot for load-in on Saturday morning before Kid Row. You must load-in during your assigned time.
Q: How much does it cost to participate in Kid Row?
The Kid Row table fee is $25. Payment is due by May 16, 2021. Parents or guardians who do not submit the tabling fee and agreement by the deadline may be required to pay a late fee or forfeit their kid artisan’s spot as an exhibitor.
Q: What does my $25 table fee cover?
Kid Row table fees cover the costs associated with the space allocated to you during the Festival, including rental of the square footage, tables, chairs, tablecloths, and other infrastructure, security, and the labor involved with preparing the venue for the Festival. This includes set up and tear down of your table, which will be set up and ready upon your arrival, and then removed by Festival staff at the conclusion of the Festival.
Q: Does Craft Lake City keep a portion of the kid artisan sales?
No. Craft Lake City and the DIY Festival do not take any sales or proceeds made by exhibitors. Your kid artisan works hard, all sales are theirs to keep!
Q: Do Kid Row participants get free entry to the DIY Festival?
Each Kid Row participant will receive two all-access exhibitor passes to be used by the Kid Row exhibitor and their parent or legal guardian. Additionally, we will provide each Kid Row artisan with two single-day comp passes to share with an assistant, friend, or family member.
Q: Why is there an entrance fee? What does it cover?
Craft Lake City is a 501-c3 charitable organization. Our mission is to educate, promote and inspire local artisans while elevating the creative culture of the Utah arts community through science, technology and art. The DIY Festival relies largely on a terrific staff of volunteers, but with a record number of participating artisans, performers, DIY engineers, and craft foodies, as well as Festival attendees, the cost of effectively managing the Festival continues to grow. The entrance fee helps cover operational costs for the Festival to ensure the future of the event. In addition, it helps fund community outreach programs that Craft Lake City sponsors throughout the year. Entrance for children 12 and under is free.
Q: Will you list my Kid Artisan on the Craft Lake City website or promotional materials?
Craft Lake City cares about protecting the privacy of kid artisans, and therefore will only post information agreed to by the parent or guardian during the application process. Typically we post an image of the kid artisan’s work (from their application), the kid artisan’s age, the bio from their application, and their business name or first name to help promote the program and get attendees excited about visiting Kid Row. However, we will only post this information with your permission given in the electronic agreement during the application process. If you prefer not to have some or any of this information posted, we understand and will follow your guidance.
Q: What if we have to cancel our participation?
If cancellations are received before June 10, 2021, we will be happy to offer a refund for your $25 participation fee. However, after June 10 we are deep in the planning process, and unfortunately cannot provide refunds for cancellations after that date. Thank you for understanding!
Setting Up
Q: Where can I park, and how do I load-in my items?
Craft Lake City will be providing load-in details closer to the Festival opening date. You will receive this information via email at least one week in advance of Kid Row.
The Utah State Fairpark manages paid parking lots on their grounds, and Craft Lake City does NOT receive passes to provide to exhibitors. Therefore, you may choose to pay the daily fee as offered by the Fairpark to park in their lots. If you are interested in free parking options, we encourage you to make use of public transportation and street parking and leave the Fairpark lots as open as possible for Festival attendees. Please note that most street parking has an enforced 2-hour time limit.
Q: What should I bring with me?
See the Kid Row Exhibitor Checklist for a list of the items you may want to consider bringing to make sure you have a great Festival experience.
Q: Will my table space be in the shade?
We attempt to place Kid Row table spaces in mostly shaded areas, but there is no guarantee they will be in the shade. Please be prepared with sunscreen, hats, reusable water bottles (or pre-purchased, sealed water bottles), and any other items to help keep you cool and protected in the sun.
Q: Where can I place my displays?
Displays must be set up on top of your table. The area in front, behind, and to the sides of your table must remain free and open in order to avoid hindering traffic flow, and to remain in compliance with fire code. Hanging items (lights, displays, etc.) from trees is not allowed.
Q: Can booth exhibitors bring their tables and chairs?
For Kid Row, we ask that you please use the tables and chairs provided in the space, as they will be shared with another artisan.
Q: Do I have access to electricity?
Electricity will not be available in Kid Row.
During the Festival
Q: How many attendees does the Festival expect?
In past years, the Festival has seen approximately 20,000 attendees over the course of the weekend.
Q: Do I get any comp tickets?
Kid Row participants will be provided with two all-access exhibitor passes, one to be used by the Kid Row artisan, and one to be used by the artisan’s parent or legal guardian. Additionally, each Kid Row artisan will receive two complimentary single-day Festival passes to share with assistants, friends, or family.
Q: Why do I need to wear my Festival credentials?
Your Festival credentials help both attendees and staff identify you as an exhibitor. Wearing your credentials helps ensure you can easily exit/re-enter the Festival if needed. Festival credentials are non-transferable. Anyone caught passing them to others not working the Festival will be asked to leave and jeopardize their participation in future DIY Festivals.
Q: Can our Kid Row artisan stay at the table alone?
No. A parent or legal guardian must remain with the child exhibitor at all times, from load-in until the end of the exhibiting hours of Kid Row, on Saturday, August 14, 2021. If two kid artisans are representing a single Kid Row business, each individual kid artisan must be accompanied by an adult at all times.
Q: Can our Kid Row artisan bring friends or siblings share their table space?
Due to space and safety restrictions, we ask that only the kid artisans listed in the application are present at their table during Kid Row.
Q: Where should I park?
Craft Lake City will be providing load-in details closer to the Festival opening date.
The Utah State Fairpark manages paid parking lots on their grounds (info here), and Craft Lake City does NOT receive passes to provide to exhibitors.
Q: Do shoppers purchase directly from exhibitors or do they check out through Craft Lake City?
Shoppers will purchase directly from you. Please be prepared to accept contactless payments due to covid-19 guidelines (venmo, square, paypal or another similar service) Wifi is not reliable at the Fairpark, so please bring a cell phone or tablet and use cellular data to process payments. Please also bring a backup battery that is fully charged, as electricity is not available in Kid Row. If you would like patrons to have the ability to pay with cash, plan to bring small change. Craft Lake City does not make or break change for vendors. There will be several ATMs on-site for Festival patrons.
Q: Is Wi-Fi available at the Festival?
There is Wi-Fi at the venue, but it is not super reliable, nor is it secure. Be prepared to rely on cellular data as needed for accepting credit card payments, etc. Be sure to bring mobile batteries to charge your device.
Q: Are booth sitters provided?
No, the Festival does not provide booth sitters. We recommend having an adult friend or family member watch your booth for you when you escort your Kid Row artisan to the restroom (they could use one of your comp single-day festival passes for entry to the Festival). Alternatively, if you do not have an additional helper, you may make a sign that says “Be Right Back” to have at your booth as you accompany your Kid Row artisan on a break.
Q: Will photos be taken at the event?
Yes. Craft Lake City staff and volunteer photographers capture the exciting events taking place at the DIY Festival each day, including the fantastic displays created by kid artisans. We will send details to parents and guardians in the Kid Row agreement.
Q: Where can I dispose of trash and liquids?
You are responsible for removing trash generated at your booth or table. The Festival bins are for patrons only. Bring your own bins and/or trash bags for trash removal, and empty it regularly. You are responsible for ensuring your area is clean and trash does not build up. Your zone manager will provide you with information about designated areas where you can periodically leave your trash.
Q: What if the weather is terrible?
We always hope for great weather at the DIY Festival, but occasionally adverse weather conditions can happen. Your safety is our priority, so Craft Lake City maintains the right to close the event if any unforeseen circumstances occur that may affect the safety of our participants and attendees.
After the Festival
Q: What if my kid artisan didn’t meet his or her financial goal?
Craft Lake City cannot guarantee that each kid artisan business will meet its financial goals or earn returns covering the cost of the space. Therefore, we cannot offer refunds. However, we hope Kid Row provides a great learning experience for every kid artisan as they discover how to run a creative business.
Q: Do we need to pay taxes on our Kid Row artisan’s sales?
Yes. Sales taxes for items sold during the Festival are required to be paid separately as the Festival qualifies as a special one-time event. Parents and legal guardians, please note that the Utah State Tax Commission will send tax forms to you about a week after the Festival. You must complete these forms on behalf of your Kid Row artisan and file sales taxes on the kid artisan’s sales in order to participate. Parents and guardians may choose to file these forms in their own name, or in the name of their Kid Row artisan. Contact your financial advisor with questions or for advice. You can also contact the special events division of the Utah State Tax Commission at 801.297.6303 or specialevent@utah.gov.
Q: Is there anything I need to know related to covid-19 for the 2021 DIY Festival?
Craft Lake City is committed to providing a safe in-person Festival for exhibitors and attendees this summer. Our team will follow and enforce required regulations and precautions according to governmental covid-19 guidelines. All attendees and participants will be required to follow any and all covid-19 rules as communicated by Craft Lake City and the venue, including required mask-wearing indoors and outdoors, designated socially-distanced areas for eating and drinking, cashless payment and more. Rules and plans may alter or change as regulations evolve. If necessary for the safety of participants, Craft Lake City will shift to an online version of the DIY Festival, in which artisans will have the option to participate.
Q: How do we provide feedback about our Festival experience?
Craft Lake City will be sending out a survey to exhibitors to collect information about your Festival experience. And you can always send a message to artisancoordinator@craftlakecity.com with any additional feedback!
