Subrosa played Craft Lake City in 2009 and 2011, and we’re delighted to be playing a third time this year. The No. 1 reason we like playing Craft Lake City is the atmosphere; being surrounded by endless lines of tables packed full of DIY art, whimsical earmuffs, feather earrings, boxes made out of board games, lamps made out of wine bottles and bucolic paintings from the DI with bloody zombies superimposed over them. Craft Lake City is full of artists taking risks, which most musicians can relate to, and selling art that lame, high-brow snoots might look down their nose at. There’s a charged energy there, an air of excitement and inspiration as you look at the wide variety of crafts artists have dreamed up and manifested in the physical world.
Playing Craft Lake City also gives us a chance to sludge out with people that might not otherwise get to see or hear you. Subrosa plays about one all-ages show a year, so it’s a good opportunity to wipe the applesauce off Little Jack’s face, round up conservative Uncle Harold who won’t step foot in a bar, and head on down to the Gallivan Center to listen to songs about animal genocide and mass anarchy.
