Blue Sky customers helping Craft Lake City 2013 DIY festival stay green

SALT LAKE CITY – In its 5th year, the annual Craft Lake City Do-It-Yourself festival is expanding to two days and is receiving even more support from Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky customers. For the second consecutive year, the Blue Sky program is supporting renewable energy equal to the amount of electricity to be used at the outdoor festival that celebrates Utah’s Do It Yourself culture.

The free event will be held at the Gallivan Center in downtown Salt Lake City, on Friday, Aug. 9 from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., and on Saturday, Aug. 10 from Noon to 10 p.m. The festival will feature more than 200 exhibits of handmade arts and crafts, science and technology, live entertainment and music, demonstrations and food vendors.

The Blue Sky program is buying renewable energy certificates from a newly-developed, western region wind project on behalf of the Craft Lake City 2013 DIY festival. This “greening” is made possible by more than 37,500 Rocky Mountain Power customers in Utah who choose to support Blue Sky renewable energy.

“The 11,000 kilowatt-hours of renewable energy being supported by Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky customers for this two-day event will have environmental benefits equivalent to avoiding about 7 tons of carbon dioxide emissions,” said Alene Bentley, Rocky Mountain Power customer and community manager. “That’s like not driving a car more than 14,700 miles or planting 161 trees,” Bentley said.

Rocky Mountain Power’s Blue Sky program provides an easy and convenient way for customers to support renewable energy in the region. When customers choose Blue Sky, renewable energy certificates are purchased on their behalf from recently developed wind energy facilities in the western United States. This guarantees that electricity from these renewable resources is delivered to the regional power pool, reducing the need for non-renewable energy and creating measurable environmental benefits.

Since 2006, Blue Sky customers have also supported the installation of 82 community-based renewable energy projects in Utah. Blue Sky is Green-e Energy certified, ensuring that customers are supporting new renewable resources in compliance with environmental and consumer protection standards.

Blue Sky representatives will be available at the Craft Lake City 2013 DIY festival to answer questions and assist customers who would like to enroll in the Blue Sky program. Stop by the Blue Sky booth to learn more and to make wind turbine yarn art. For more information about Blue Sky, call toll free at 800-769-3717 or visit www.rockymountainpower.net/bluesky.
