Mental health challenges can often arise in response to a person’s life circumstances and the environment. This workshop will examine the context for mental health challenges and present scientifically-verified coping strategies that can help build resilience through creativity, connection, and guided journaling. Rather than relying on the formulaic, one-size fits all template journals, this workshop will result in a collage journal that reflects the uniqueness of each individual at the same time as providing a structure to help shape a narrative around your personal mental health experiences. Additionally, in order to help this self-care oriented workshop create a community connection, we will be donating 10% of ticket sales to Valley Behavioral Health, a local community-oriented mental health and addiction treatment center.

About The Instructor: Claire Adams is the Associate Director of the Community Writing Center and Associate Professor of Humanities at Salt Lake Community College. Claire was born in Belfast, Northern Ireland and moved to the United States in November 2007. Claire has studied creative writing & mental health journaling at workshops taught by Cheryl Strayed & Roda Ahmed. She is also the alt spring break faculty lead for the Intersectional Approaches to Mental Health trip. At the Community Writing Center, Claire works on the youth programs. As an associate professor of humanities at Salt Lake Community College, Claire develops curriculum for and teaches the Intro to Humanities 1100 class and the Essentials of the Humanities 1010 (Online). She also teaches INTL 2040 The Immigrant Experience Through Literature & Film class. In her spare time, she is passionate about refugee advocacy and enjoys running, hiking, skiing and paddle boarding.
Are you tired of people telling you that your objects are impossible? Well it’s time to prove them wrong with this curious 3D design workshop. Instructor Zach Hagen will walk you through the process of designing a 3D print (no experience necessary), working with templates to start and building customized objects that make the impossible, possible. Due to the unique way 3D printers work, you can create mind-blowing objects-inside-objects-inside-objects, customizing cube fractals that will access your logic and creativity in equal parts. At the end of the workshop, your design will be sent to Imagine That 3D’s printing facility and be ready for pickup within the week.

About The Instructor: “To be able to hold something you created in a program is just amazing!” says Zach Hagen of Imagine That 3D. Zach has been doing 3D Printing for about 10 years, starting by building his own 3d printer out of wood and zip – it may not have worked well but was very cool at the time. He has been designing in three dimensions since high school and majored in Architecture sustainable design and mechanical design in college. To fulfill his final requirements, creating a physical model of an architectural design, he decided to try 3D Printing for the first time… it blew his mind and he has been printing ever since.

About the Workshop Host: Kati Lewis is an associate professor of English, Linguistics, and Writing Studies at Salt Lake Community College (SLCC) and the director of the SLCC Community Writing Center. She teaches creative writing, monsters in popular U.S. literature, critical theory, composition, and queer studies. She’s a hybrid genre writer who needs to make more time for writing, a lover who needs to make more time for being in love, a marathoner who makes hearty attempts at running more, mother and quasi-artist/quasi-chef/quasi-yogi. Her science fiction, horror, and magical realism work explores themes of silence and voice. Most of her essays and short stories are fragmented narratives. Fragmentation allows her to experiment with point of view, time, and memory as witness, censor, and survivor.
About the Workshop Guest: Adam Dastrup has spent more than 15 years at SLCC, Adam has taught courses in natural disasters, physical and world geography, GIS, environmental science and global positioning systems. In 2019, he created the Utah System of Higher Education’s first drone certificate program, and he is also the founder of Open Geography Education (OGE), where he developed online textbooks and made them available at no cost to students. With the three textbooks that he created, Adam has saved SLCC students roughly $1.3 million since 2015. The books are also available to students worldwide.

Learn how to make your own terrarium in an oversize Mason jar using local mosses and other natural elements! Join Utah local and biology nerd, Lexi Dowdall, in a brief discussion about the importance of the water cycle and how it impacts us and the ecosystems along the Wasatch Front. We’ll then recreate the water cycle in miniature by building our own terrariums with rocks, soil and mosses. This class is great for science fans and folks of all ages, including children! All materials and supplies are provided for this class.

About The Instructor: Lexi is a Utah native who earned a Bachelor of Science in biology from the University of Puget Sound in Washington. Forever fascinated by the natural world around her, Lexi loves to hike, bike and ski in the Wasatch Mountains and beyond. Lexi works in the ski industry and recently taught herself how to paint with watercolors, opening her own online art shop and drawing inspiration from the landscapes of Utah.
