Craft Lake City Presents: Crafting a Community, a conference for entrepreneurs at the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. The event will highlight four Craft Lake City DIY Festival alum: Beaux Ellis Underwood of St. Bohéme, Sarah Longoria of Municipal Ballet, Levi Rogers of Charming Beard Coffee and Susan Petersen of Freshly Picked Moccasins. These business owners will tell their own story and share how participating in Craft Lake City’s DIY Festival and other community events has shifted, shaped and changed them as artisans and how they do business. The event will be held on April 12, 2014 from 10 a.m. to Noon. Tickets for the event are $10 and can be purchased on 24tix.com.
Charming Beard Coffee roasts and serves the highest quality coffee possible, creating and investing in the community and establishing relationships with everyone down the coffee chain–from farmers to restaurants. Charming Beard believes roasting coffee isn’t about profit margins or doing the next thing. Roasting coffee is a craft.
Beaux Ellis Underwood is the director of the local musical group, St. Bohéme. They play French and Eastern European-inspired music.
Sarah Longoria is the founder of Municipal Ballet Co., a group of classically trained dancers and choreographers with a contemporary aesthetic, who aim to provide Salt Lake City with the public utility of dance. The two met in 2013 at the DIY Fest, sparking a future collaboration of live music and dance.
Susan Petersen is the CEO and founder of Freshly Picked, a moccasin company that she started in 2009, after becoming frustrated by the lack of well-designed baby shoes. She now makes moccasins for the rich and famous (or at least their kids). Susan’s biggest thrill is not in seeing her moccasins in the glossy magazines–although that is fun–it’s spotting her moccasins at the grocery store or the library on the feet of her loyal customers. Susan is a recent winner on ABC’s Shark Tank.
