Local Voices: Equality Utah’s Gorgeous Planet

Craft Lake City Announces
New Installation, Local Voices: Equality Utah’s Gorgeous Planet

May 7, 2023, Salt Lake City, UT – Craft Lake City and Equality Utah are excited to present a dynamic new street-side installation, Local Voices: Equality Utah’s Gorgeous Planet. This installation, emphasizing courage & curiosity over fear, is displayed to the public via 14 steel frames along Broadway (300 S), between 200 West and Main Street in downtown Salt Lake City through the end of June.

In its mission to showcase the strength of our community, Local Voices: Equality Utah’s Gorgeous Planet utilizes beautiful photographs from Equality Utah’s various events held year-round to call for equality and inclusivity. These events include their tremendous work with legislation endeavors; Diversity, Equity and Inclusion training; and the annual Allies Gala.

“Queer Utahns are a gift to the planet. We are here to create beauty, art, laughter and joy. We are also voices that challenge the status quo, call for justice and seek equality for those who have historically been excluded,” says Troy Williams, executive director for Equality Utah. “Despite the many ideological divides in society, we are all forged from the same stardust. We are more connected to each other than we realize. Within the ferment of polarization there is one identity that still binds us together: our shared humanity. We are of cosmic origin. We are gorgeous, darling. We’re here on this planet to shine.”

Founded in 2001, Equality Utah is Utah’s premiere LGBTQ advocacy organization, leading efforts for LGBTQ civil rights at the state and local levels. They work tirelessly sponsoring LGBTQ legislation, lobbying elected officials, building coalitions and empowering individuals & organizations alike to engage in the legislative process. As part of their programs, Equality Utah educates Utahns about issues in the LGBTQ community and trains LGBTQ Utahns & allies to respond and work proactively for LGBTQ equality. The Equality Utah Foundation provides citizen lobby trainings on diversity and inclusion to Utah businesses through their Business Equality Leader program. The Foundation continues their training with a quarterly queer lecture series called QTalks.

“Craft Lake City is honored to partner with Equality Utah for this new seasonal installation,” says Craft Lake City Executive Director, Angela H. Brown, “as we spread awareness of their mission to secure equal rights and protections for LGBTQ Utahns and their families.”
