Craft Lake City is excited to partner once again with PBS Utah to offer rich, hands-on craft workshops inspired by PBS programming, now featuring “Stitched Stories: Embroidered Patchmaking,” led by celebrated Hopi/Tewa artist Jessica Wiarda of Honovi Design.
This two-hour, beginner-friendly workshop draws inspiration from Ken Burns’ upcoming PBS documentary THE AMERICAN REVOLUTION, and invites participants to explore history through embroidery. Wiarda will show how embroidered symbols conveyed stories of heritage, identity, spirit and resilience for Indigenous peoples during the American Revolution and guide attendees through creating their own custom patch that blends personal meaning with historical significance.
Participants Will:
- Learn embroidery and patch-making techniques
- Explore cultural meaning of Indigenous embroidered symbols
- Be provided with all needed supplies
- Take home a finished, one-of-a-kind hand stitched patches

About the Instructor:
Artist Jessica Wiarda’s (@jesswiarda) work focuses on blending traditional Native American Hopi design with contemporary color palettes and design trends. Wiarda’s company, Honovi Design, features various forms of authentic, Hopi designed apparel including bandanas, scarves and pins.
