Free exhibition walk with the artist on April 21 at 10am
Salt Lake City, April 10 – Craft Lake City, The Center for the Living City and The Temporary Museum of Permanent Change are pleased to announce a new Celebration of the Hand exhibition showcasing the work of local artist Alyce Carrier. The exhibition will be on view from April 17–June 17, 2018 and the public is invited to join the artist for a free exhibition walk inspired by Jane Jacobs on Saturday, April 21 at 10am.
Informed by activist Jane Jacobs’ fascination with self-organized urbanism, Celebration of the Hand is a seasonal outdoor exhibition designed to enhance and reflect Salt Lake City’s cultural district through the work of local artists. Celebration of the Hand is displayed in eight large frames adjacent to the sidewalks along Broadway (300 South) between 200 West and West Temple, and is open 24 hours a day, 7 days a week free of charge.
The spring 2018 installment of Celebration of the Hand is comprised of eight paintings by local artist Alyce Carrier. Often working in clay and paper in addition to paint, Carrier’s artwork uses line, color and pattern to comment on the familiar and mundane tasks that may occur in a traditional day: sweeping the floor, waiting in line at the grocery store, or playing phone tag with a friend. Carrier holds a BFA from the University of Utah, and her work has been displayed in solo and group exhibitions in New York City, Seattle, Salt Lake City and beyond. She most recently served as an artist-in-residence at the Center for Ceramics of Berlin.
“Celebration of the Hand empowers artists to take an active role in contributing to the visual landscape of their city,” says Angela Brown, Executive Director of Craft Lake City. “We are thrilled to highlight Alyce Carrier’s work in our newest exhibition, and look forward to witnessing passersby engaging with her paintings.”
