Craft Lake City Takes Science to a New Level at the GFiber STEM Building!

Craft Lake City is electrified to announce the out-of-this-world programs in store at the 17th Annual DIY Festival Presented By Harmons.

From crafty hands-on projects to immersive experiments, the GFiber STEM building is the place to be for explosive fun. For Craft Lake City, DIY Fest is a chance to highlight the many talented local STEM makers. From robotics to game designers, Utah is full of interesting and unique inventors. No DIY Fest is complete without their participation. These exhibitors provide thrilling projects for all ages, making STEM accessible and fun.

On Saturday, Aug. 9, Craft Lake City and Utah STEM Action Center will be hosting the Pop-up Makers Fair. This feature uses a crafts-based approach to engage children ages 3-8, and their families, in hands-on STEM learning. The activities will include: cardboard creations, electronics, paper crafts, edible engineering, secret codes and math magic. Parents will love the engaging kid-oriented volunteers, the many make-and-take projects that can be easily replicated at home and the fascination ignited in the children’s minds as they open a whole new world of possibilities.

These maker events are funded through a grant from bioMerieux and designed to be replicable, affordable and sustainable over time. Six nearby communities (West Valley City, Layton/Clearfield, Kearns, Taylorsville/Murray, Midvale and Rosepark/Fairpark) have been identified to access this learning resource, using themed Innovation Stations which focus on the design process and problem solving.

The fun doesn’t end there either. Sunday, August 10 is Indie Game Day where kids will get the chance to play new unique games designed by local Utah game studios and designers. They’ll get the chance to learn all about the game making process with a special Game-developer Q&A and even give feedback to the designers.

Also, for all the aspiring engineers a Robot Invasion will take place all weekend long! The heritage building will be the hotspot for all the mechanical marvels. Utah’s Neuro Robotics lab will even show-off the robotic prosthetics they have developed. It’s every sci-fi lover’s fantasy. And no DIY Fest is complete without Rocket Launches. For $5 festival attendees can take part in aerial thrills by building and launching bottle rockets.

Other attractions and activities at the GFiber STEM building include the Dark Arts’ Science of Tattoos, our special Photon booth, VR exploration and much, much more. There is just no shortage of learning at Craft Lake City’s 17th Annual DIY Fest Presented By Harmons.
