Salt Lake City, UT – July 14, 2022 – Lovers of technology — unite! This year’s Google Fiber STEM Building will bring together tech hobbyists, major research institutions, and local businesses of all scales to highlight the curious questions being asked and answered by Utah’s tech culture.
This year’s STEM Building has something for everyone! Our all-ages water rockets activity will make a splash to cool off your day, while partners like The Leo will provide hands-on robotics fun and Sundance Film Festival will offer VR entertainment with their Oculus headsets. One Human’s Trash is Another Human’s Nose Cone
Last year, our water rocket activity was a centerpiece of the DIY Fest, with kids and adults of all ages launching 2 liter bottles sky high to learn about the effects of gravity, the nature of water and air pressure, and the engineering design method. Oh, and to bask in the cooling mist that comes along with the launches! This year, we’ve had a chance to take our water rockets out to Title I Schools throughout Salt Lake County, all the while getting better at working with kids and families to achieve their wildest rocket dreams, and testing different post consumer materials as rocket accessories. One human’s trash is another human’s nose cone, after all. Water rockets will be launched at intervals throughout the DIY Fest weekend, and will offer you the chance to test your own engineering design skills. This year we’ve extended the activity by including a measuring system to determine the height of rocket flights, as well as working with partners to create 3D printed nose cones that will really get your rocket soaring.
Going Deeper
In addition to our marvelous exhibitors, this year’s STEM Building will provide extra content in the form of theme days that allow participants to explore topics in depth: Friday is Programmer’s Night, where we’ll take a deep look at coding and digital design with our partners at V School. Saturday is Sustainably STEM presented by Recyclops, a day for community partners to provide information sessions and workshops about how Utahns can work locally to create sustainability. Finally, Sunday is STEM for Everyone — where we’ll feature local tinkerers that want to teach you a new hobby or skillset. More details about specific workshops, demonstrations, and additional content will be coming soon!
In the meantime, we can assure you that, from custom guitar effect pedals (Wasatch Noiseworks) to the chemistry of cooking (Harmons Cooking School), there is no STEM fair that compares to the Google Fiber STEM Building at the Annual Craft Lake City DIY Festival!
