Craft Lake City and Utah Community Action are pleased to announce a new street-side installation, Local Voices: Utah Community Action, on view outdoors in downtown Salt Lake City in April 2021. The social distancing-friendly project is displayed in 6 steel frames along Broadway (300 S), between West Temple and 200 East.
Founded in 1965, Utah Community Action (UCA) is a nationally recognized provider of comprehensive services for income-eligible families. UCA created six designs for the plakat frames, each highlighting one of their six core programs—Head Start, Adult Education, Case Management & Housing, Nutrition, HEAT, and Weatherization—which address barriers to self-reliance to empower individuals, strengthen families and build communities through education programs.
In 2020, Utah Community Action served 60,887 individuals impacted by COVID-19 and other financial hardships. From April 26-30, under the theme re-IMAGINE, UCA will host a Virtual Giving Event to raise financial support and continue providing on-going services to the community.
Members of the public joined Craft Lake City and Utah Community Action for a free virtual Lunch & Learn event on Wednesday, April 21 at noon. Attendees had the opportunity to learn more about UCA, ask questions about their community-based programs, and share ideas inspired by the plakat installation. The Local Voices steel frames, also known as “plakats,” are arranged in a fashion that allows for appropriate outdoor, social distancing. All members of the public are invited to view the project on their next solo-social distancing walk, and examine how they can take part in reimagining a community in which everyone has the essential services they need to focus on self-reliance. Local Voices: Utah Community Action is open to the public 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, free of charge.
