Craft Lake City Handmade Plakats

Last month, we introduced the first installment in a series of 11 plakats showcasing various arts and crafts icons. A plakat (German word for billboard) is a 9-foot by 4-foot steel frame that has been secured to the sidewalk along 300 South in downtown Salt Lake City between Main Street and 200 West. The plakat serve as the base for Craft Lake City’s outdoor exhibit, Celebration of the Hand, in partnership with The Temporary Museum of Permanent Change, another non-profit organization. Each of the icons were converted digitally into large-scale cross-stitch patterns by CLC volunteers Janet Lee and Kristin Baird. Rachel Hayes and crew brought the images to life through the use of wire fencing, t-shirt yarn and yarn upcycled from plastic grocery bags. Flanking each 3-foot wide cross-stitch panel are samplings of various forms of fiber art created by Kristin Baird. The materials for these side areas include T-shirt yarn, plastic yarn and acrylic yarn and feature knitting, crochet, string art, weaving and more. The displays will be available for viewing through the end of September.
