New STEM Lab Workshops with Craft Lake City

DIY Mental Health Journal with collage cover featuring red images on the front and blue images and text on the backJoin us February 16 from 6-7:30 p.m. for a science-based self care workshop we’re calling Building Wellness: DIY Mental Health Journals. Craft Lake City and the Community Writing Center are pleased to present a creative expression- and science-focused workshop that will take place at the Community Writing Center’s facility inside the Salt Lake City Public Library building.

This workshop will feature the Community Writing Center’s own Claire Adams, an avid mental health journaler who has studied under six-time New York Times bestselling mental health author & shame researcher Brené Brown. In this instructional session, Claire will offer science-based journaling tips centered on building resilience to the environmental and circumstantial factors that can affect mental health. Participants will have the opportunity to express themselves creatively by customizing their new journal with collage materials provided by Craft Lake City. In addition to providing an outlet for self care, this workshop will build community connections by donating 10% of ticket sales to Valley Behavioral Health, a local community-oriented mental health center.

Craft Lake City is overjoyed to announce this as the first workshop in our new STEM Labs series, designed to eliminate the barriers between academic sciences and the arts by inspiring creativity and connection between makers and dreamers in tech, science, and math. Other workshop titles in this series will include DIY SciFi (Mar. 10) and Essential Equations / The Intersection of Poetry and Math (Apr. TBD).

Craft Lake City is also delighted about our new partnership with the Community Writing Center, an organization founded with a simple philosophy: everyone can write. You may not think of yourself as a writer, but think about all the writing that you did today alone. Did you make an update on social media? Perhaps you wrote an email? Text much? Or have you ever kept a journal? If you have written anything, you are a writer. At the Community Writing Center, we challenge all the myths that prevent people from thinking they can write. And as a community writing center we go beyond simply helping writers like you write—we seek to build our community by joining people together for the sheer joy of expressing ourselves through writing.

Your ticket purchase for this workshop will help build our community’s mental health resources! We are pleased to introduce Valley Behavioral Health as the beneficiary of this workshop, and we’ll be donating 10% of ticket sales to support their mission.
